Blog Post #6: Midyear
A semester of journalism already passed! Even though Mr. Skillings showed us the course requirements at the beginning of the year, I had no idea what was expected out of me besides the occasional illustration for the issues. After the first issue of menial work, I quickly realized that journalism was no trip in the park.
The discouraging D’s and F’s on my progress reports showed me that I was quickly on my way to achieving the worst grades of my life. I pursued work on my own to make up lost points. In addition to learning the journalism process of interviewing, reporting, and editing, I developed a work ethic that is arguably better than it was at the beginning of the semester.
I learned to deal with constant critique on my writing. I am usually very wary of having others look at my work. But for the sake of getting my work published, I sent in my work to multiple editors and dealt with the constant revisions.
I plan to take my newly developed work ethic and apply it to the class throughout next semester. I expect next semester to be a much smoother course and in turn more fun.
